To Siege or Not to Siege

Realism = Really Scary!

Since I could remember, I was all about fantasy. When I met Super Mario, we became fast friends. The world surrounding the colorful characters was enchanting and delightfully comic book-esque. Despite being called baddies, they were never really bad. (you would kill them by jumping on their heads, for crying out loud.)

In retrospect, there are some games that I just can’t play. Catch me messing around with Silent Hill and you’ll likely find me cowering in a bright florescent room, my hands trembling and saucer-eyed. Having played around with my most recent game.. I can honestly say that realism is becoming a lot like Silent Hill, for me..

Though I’m barely 1/10th of the way into Call of Duty: World at War, the suspense and thrill I feel while playing this makes me more appreciative of people who have battled in real life. Check out the short video I made capturing that sense of urgency to complete a mission, the need to get it right the first time. Maybe I’m just skittish, or maybe not.. what do you think?

    Haha, why were you crouching half the time when there were no enemies around? But yes, I agree, as videogames have become more realistic I think they can capture what actually happened in the scenario. Which is why I think games like “6 days in Fallujah” are important. They give us a sense of what is going on.

    I also just realized you have a gamertag, and don’t seem to play alot of them lol.

    I was crouching because my Russian buddy told me to “be quiet”.. quite intense if I may say.. 8-) Yeah, I’m pretty much a PC purist with the occasional console purchase if it’s not available for my desktop. ^.^

    I wouldn’t put too much stock in it, personally. And the reason why is for one very simple reason. In a video game, you’re all by yourself. In an actual situation, you’re there with other people. People who are capable of rational thought, leadership and have the skills to make it through. Let me give you an example.

    I’ve played many submarine simulators because I was in the Navy as a submariner. Now, I was basically flying by the seat of my pants and taking tips out of the novel “The Boat”, written by a war correspondant in WW2. It was nerve-wracking as hell, especially when you came to avoiding depth charge attacks and when your boat takes on water.

    Conversely, our boat was out doing an exercise when we flooded. I won’t go into it because it’s a bit too complicated and would take too much time. But at 500 feet we do an emergency surface. I get out of my bunk around 5 minutes after going into it. When I find out that the “Emergency Stations” called was real, I think to myself “Damn, I should have gotten out quicker”. But people, skilled and knowledgeable people, ensured that we didn’t end up on the bottom of the ocean.

    There IS indeed a marked difference between a gaming world and the real one. But it’s not always the way you think.
