Duke Nukem Never?
Today we remember the legendary Duke Nukem, found in his iconic self-named game along with Duke Nukem II and Duke Nukem 3D. He took on the noble quest of saving Earth from aliens who wanted to enslave Earth’s women.. and Duke loves women (who doesn’t?). He was a muscle-bound male chauvinist who reminds us of 80’s action flick heroes, complete with the frequent amusing one-liners…
He is a gaming icon and was the inspiration for a ton of funny stuff, including this hilarious video:
So I was quite sad when I read that ShackNews announced today that 3D Realms shut down, and various sites across the web confirmed this, as has 3D Realms’ webmaster. What does this mean for Duke Nukem 4? Duke Nukem Forever was in development for 12 years.. 12 years! The game could never have lived up to expectations. All signs pointed to a relatively quick release (according to the head of 3D Realms, it was almost 90% finished in January), but hell, we waited this long for Duke to return. What was a few more months, or even a year?
When 3D Realms shut its doors, we quickly found out that the development of Prey 2 had shifted to another studio. Apogee and Deep Silver announced that the Duke Nukem Trilogy (three games in development for hand-helds) was still in development and that the demise of 3D Realms did not affect this. Still.. no release date set for Duke Nukem.
Will Duke be back in all his gun wielding, bubble gum-chewing glory? Or is he.. “all out of gum.”?
