GDC with ADD – Day 1
So I rolled out of bed later than I had hoped after last night’s craziness, but still hopeful that I could bribe my way into the GDC. Thankfully the press registration was actually open today, and I must have pleased the gaming gods somehow because they accepted me as press without any hassle! Well, sort of..
Somehow I ended up interpreting a question about what site I was with as whether or not I was a “hardcore gamer,” and my badge doesn’t say nixiepixel.com even though the site qualified. I was too red-faced to ask them to change it.
I learned a lot about how independent games are made and distributed, and met a number of indie developers, including Tuna Technologies (making a side-scrolling claymation-art game called Cletus Clay) and Nimblebit (making Zero Gear, a physics-fueled kart combat game that is -not a Mario Kart clone- =). There really is amazing diversity in games that have been and are being created, and it is a real shame that we hear about so few of them.
The highlight of my day was an amazing experience listening to Dr. Jane McGonigal of the Institute for the Future discuss how we, through the games industry, can raise overall happiness throughout the world. I can’t wait to talk more about this incredible woman and her thoughts.
Things will really begin to heat up on Wednesday when the Expo hall opens. I’ll be there in all my ADD glory, will you be ready?
