Ubuntu Applications – How to Get ‘Em

Installing your favorite software (games, applications, and utilities) is as simple as can be in Ubuntu! Everything you need is at your fingertips, in the Software Center. In this episode of Ubuntu is Easy, I show you just how easy it is to find and install the programs that can make your switch to Linux even easier.

Too easy for you? I have another video for more intermediate users set to post by this weekend!

Chromium not Chrome….. Chrome is closed source while Chromium is not and Chromium updates trickle down slower from Upstream.

    windows 7 normal + portal 2 + medium video setting = BIG LAG !!!! Ubuntu 13.04 + wine + portal2 + second screen + extreme video setting = 0 LAG ;) (tested no fake )

    • La VloZ

Personnaly i don’t like wine cuz it sucks, it doesn’t correctly run windows apps, and if it runs correctly it propably an old app :), always search the software for Ubuntu or alternatives :)

Alas Ubuntu. I’m a long time Windows power user. Recently I tried installing Ubuntu, well what a nightmare! (no I do not have Windows 8-I’m aware of the lock in problems associated with this OS).

Attempts to install Ubuntu from USB and DVD both failed. The OS simply failed to initiate even after I changed the boot sequence in BIOS. In the end Wubi installed the OS from within Windows alongside windows as a dual boot and then the fun really began.

Ubuntu ran very hot (I suspect this is a video card issue) but there was no insights to be gained from tech notes or the forums.

The OS ran for a few days and I had a little play with it. Its not hard to use and it was very easy to install apps. After a few days however it simply stopped working and when I logged in I was presented with a black screen. So that was that.

Comments posted on Ask Ubuntu went unanswered and when I dared suggest (very politely) that Ubuntu may not be ideal for mainstream users my comments were quickly edited to death.

This is in direct contrast to EVIL MS who handle positive criticism well and take on board users feedback. If Ubuntu wants to grow and pick up market share it needs to grow a thicker skin and be prepared to listen to its users. In particular I would have thought newbies would be a great source of feedback as they represent the average user.

So bye bye Ubuntu. I may try Linux again but if I do it wont have your name on it.

Don’t use Wubi cause you will setup Ubuntu ON Windows, and it will so much unstable then unusable :), install it as stand alone OS its the best choice ever :) and sure you can benefit from teh dual boot ;)

  • La VloZ

mmmm linux is easy for me and i don’t get troubleshooting when using it :), but its very hard for non-technical users :), good luck to them and i hope this tutorial can help them :)
